Virginia Beach is the most populous city in Virginia and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the eastern United States. Featuring miles of beach line, it is the perfect place to spend a summer vacation no matter what age you might be. Hundreds of resorts and hotels line the coast and every years surfing and beach volleyball competitions take place that draw in crowds from around the world. Virginia Beach is truly a one of a kind destination. Virginia Beach came to be from the constant divide of territory within the original Virginia colony. In 1691, the large area known as Lower Norfolk County was divided into Norfolk County and Princess Anne County. Virginia Beach began to grow within the confines of Princess Anne County as a beach resort town in the late 19th century. As rail service ran into the area, more people came and the city grew and was finally incorporated in 1906. Even more people started to flood into the city after 1922, when major highways were built to lead into it. It has relied heavily on tourism and real estate to function, though defense has also been a major source of economy for the city. |
